As he walked out of the cinema, Gavin knew that his life would change forever. It was the impact of a documentary that kicked him into action, whereby he decided to lower his family's impact on the planet, in the attempt to live a more sustainable lifestyle. This is the story of his first year of 'The Greening of Gavin'.
Gavin's philosophy is a simple one and he describes it as this;
"An Ordinary Australian Man Who Has A Green Epiphany Whilst Watching A Documentary, Gets a Hybrid Car, Plants A Large Organic Vegetable Garden, Goes Totally Solar, Lowers Consumption, Feeds Composts Bins and Worms, Harvests Rainwater, Raises Chickens, Makes Cheese and Soap, and Eats Locally. All In The Effort To Reduce Our Family's Carbon Footprint So We Can Start Making A Difference For Our Children & Future Generations To Come."

This review refers to the electronic (Kindle) version of this book.As a long-time follower of the Greening of Gavin blog, I was keen to read the newly-released book, although I was worried that it might just be a rehash of blog content, as so many books-from-blogs I have read have been in the past.
I needn't have worried.
The book is fresh, full of new content, and inspiring in every way. It roughly traces the author's transformation from consumer to sustainability advocate, and talks openly about successes and failures, decisions that he made at the time and what he would now do instead in the light of 20 / 20 hindsight.
As I read, I found myself taking another look at our own electricity usage, our own insulation, our own car usage. I found that to follow Gavin's journey was an inspiration - it helps me to see, by reading someone else's changes, that we had "lapsed" a bit and that we needed to review our own lifestyle yet again. Reading his book and reviewing our own outputs has already easily saved us the cost price several times over - and reminded me that a journey to "green" is one of continual review and analysis, change and awareness.
At no point is the author arrogant or condescending, something that is rare and very (very!) welcome in this type of "personal journey" book. This is one of its strengths. The author's voice is incredibly appealing and friendly throughout, coming across as a friendly neighbour rather than some highbrow know-it-all expert. You can relate to him at all stages of his journey, and identify with him throughout very easily.
You get the feeling that Gavin is absolutely delighting in his new lifestyle, and his desire to share his new knowledge with others never springs from the need to be seen as any sort of guru, but comes instead from the heart - from the absolute, earth-bound belief that he loves our world, loves his kids, can see what is happening, and wants to do what he can to assist others to become happier, healthier beings. And save the planet at the same time! :)
To be honest, I didn't expect the book to be as good as it is. I expected, as I said above, a re-hash of the blog, and have been really happy to find something new.
In terms of flaws, I'd have liked to see maybe a bullet-pointed list of hints and tips at the end of each chapter, summarising its contents. It would help readers like me, who are likely to re-read it and dip into it, find the content that we need more easily when we return to the book. And more graphs and figures clarifying the benefits (particularly the financial benefits) of "greening", because they are numerous, would have been welcome. There *is* a bulleted list of changes at the end of the novel, but a chapter-based version of suggested changes to make would be great.
The book also does shuffle backwards and forwards in time a little, and that can be confusing to the reader not familiar with the author's blog.
Overall, though, this is a book well worth the money. As a fellow "greenie in progress", I'm also glad that the author has chosen to make an electronic version available - not only is it cheaper, it saves the paper!
I'm looking forward to Gavin's next book. Based on what I've seen from his first effort, I'll be pre-ordering his second.

The Greening of Gavin My First Year of Living Sustainably eBook Gavin Webber Kim Webber Reviews
This is a great book and I love the layout. He describes what he did and what he would do differently now. Also gives actually results of his changes. Lots of interesting ideas and places to explore if you too are interested in reducing your print on our Mother Earth!
Read this book some time ago but was discussing with a friend last night so thought I'd add my review. The piece I shared with her is how he tells the story of not just how he turned the switch to decide to truly pursue sustainable living, but how his family joined him. How he convinced them to. It isn't so much that others believe global warming is a problem, but that they truly accept how urgently real it is to where they will do something about it. He tells a compelling story. His own. We need thousands more of him. Thanks, Gavin!
